Wild About Claiming Racehorses

In winter of 2021 I purchased 19-year-old Kentucky Bred Broodmare Wild In Manila an unraced Keenland Grad that RNA as a yearling for $70,000 in the 2003 September sale.  Wild in Manila is sired by MGSW Wild Rush and out of Manila Rain by MGSW Manila. Wild In Manila Pedigree Here Wild in Manila has 11 foals of racing age on record including unraced 2-year-old Wild Invasion. 2 Black Type Performers and a Sprint Champion.  Wild Kira (FL) Graded Stakes Placed with 69 starts with a record of 12-7-10 = $140,349.  Azzurra (WV) Stakes Placed with 40 starts with a record of 11-5-7 = $240,140.  Sprint Champion Pete’swildone 2014 imported Sprint Champion in Jamaica. Other notable Wild In Manila progeny Burnt Offering (FL) 68 starts with a record of 14-6-9 = 234,922.  Pyrite Adios (FL) with 33 starts a record of 4-7-5 = $91,227.  Unsaintly with 19 starts with a record of 2-0-1 = $53,740.  Easy to see that Wild in Manila progeny has longevity, war horse type genetics.  That along with a very high nicking to our GSP Stallion Whiskey Echo , Pedigree here , prompt me to purchase Wild In Manila.

When discussing success stories claiming racehorses, Cinderella stories like Rich Strike to be claimed for $30,000 and go on to win the Kentucky Derby is top of the list and are few and far between.  More common availability is stories like progeny of Wild In Manila.  Wild Kira for example, in 2012, ran in a $15,000 claimer just after breaking her maiden as a 3-year-old.  Only brought $8500 as a 2-year-old in the April Ocala Breeders Sale in 2011.   Wild in Kira went on to win 11 more races and place in a Graded Stakes being a Blacktype Performer and earn over $100,000 in the process. Azzurra comes along in 2016 and as a 3-year-old breaks her maiden and runs in a $15,000 claimer 2 months later. Azzura goes on to win 10 more races and earn over $194,000 more in earnings and becomes a Blacktype performer.  In 2019, at the time of the $15,000 claimer Azzurra’s half-sister Wild Kira and half brother Burnt Offering had proven themselves as war horses and winners of double-digit races.  Definitely making Azzurra an attractive claim at $15,000 given the war horse heritage of her siblings.

Wild in Manila now 20 years young runs in the pasture with mares 3 to 10 years old and doesn’t show her age one bit.  Be on the lookout for Wild Invasion a 2020 filly progeny of Wild In Manila by Normandy Invasion. Meanwhile we are hopeful for our future war horse, upcoming 2023 foal by Whiskey Echo x Wild In Manila.
